EmPower will be participating in a virtual side event at the UN Forum on Responsible Business and Human Rights, co-organized by UNEP, OECD and OHCHR. The Side event titled ‘Building Back Better: Responsible Business Conduct, Human Rights and the Environment” will take place on June 12th.
The focus of this event will be to take a closer look at the role of businesses in protecting people’s rights to a healthy and safe environment in the face of plastic pollution and climate change in a post-pandemic world. EmPower will also be joined by UNEP’s other flagship project with the Swedish Development Cooperation Agency- Speakers will discuss how business conduct, human rights and environmental protection are linked and share examples of good business practices that work for people and planet and combat plastic pollution and climate change.
In this discussion, Smita Rakesh, from Social Alpha, one of the strategic partners of EmPower will highlight how energy access-based programs could be specifically designed to ensure equity and inclusion of women and other socio-economically marginalised groups, while build local capacities and resilience. Social Alpha is an initiative to drive economic growth, social justice and climate action through the power of entrepreneurship and market-creating innovations. Smita will be drawing on examples from EmPower and Social Alpha to share learnings on how few early stage investors are going beyond the “traditional investment” route and consider the human rights approach while deciding to support an energy solution providers and make sure that solutions are serving communities and segments that are often left in the periphery.
